Dear Parents,
Welcome to Sociedad Honorica de Amistad (SHA)! I wanted to share with the parents a bit about what SHA is, what we will be doing, and where to find more information. SHA is a national middle school Spanish honor society. It is an activity based society that was formed in 1953 in order to encourage language and community. In our SHA students must have a C or better. If students fall under the C they can continue as long as they are tutoring to help raise their grade. In addition, they must do three activities: ambassadorship, service to school, and service to community. Lastly, they must be involved in outside language activities such as contests. More information can be found here:

All students in SHA will be required to take part to NSE. Students will take this test in April. Last year over 170,000 students took the test nationwide. Students can earn scholarships, medals, and prizes! More information can be found here:

Each student has chosen to participate in either a poster or poetry contest, sponsored by American Association for Teaching Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP). Students also can win prizes and recognition.
Poster: The posters are due in November (date TBA).
Poetry: The poetry contest will be held at Niles North High School in November (TBA).

Students are also able to buy t-shirts (and approximately half already have). They are 10.00.
Students this year must also be involved in projects that help school and community. Last year students taught kindergartners Spanish. They also chose an international project, called the Pulsera Project. According to their website, “The Pulsera Project is a nonprofit organization that educates, empowers, and connects Central American artists with students in more than 1,300 U.S. schools through the sale of colorful handwoven bracelets, or "pulseras" in Spanish.”
More information can be found here:

In addition, I would like to plan one or two Spanish themed activities throughout the year. Students will be involved in choosing upcoming events. More information to come!
Thank you for allowing your child to be a member of SHA! We could not do this without you!
Sincerely,
Ms. Greenman
